"There is no question that climate change is happening; the only arguable point is what part humans play in it."
David Attenborough - British naturalist and broadcaster
The climate crisis is one of the threatening stories of our time affecting all regions around the world. On another hand, while the world economy is trying to recuperate from pandemic lows, energy prices are soaring high, giving a tough time to both individuals and businesses. Today, let's try to focus on our carbon footprint and how AMA as an organization is trying to help clients reduce their carbon footprint and save costs.
Mike Berners-Lee, the author of The Carbon Footprint of Everything, defines carbon footprint as "The total of all the greenhouse gas emissions that had to take place for a product to be produced or for an activity to take place."
Simply, the term expresses the impact of activities and products like transportation, usage of household energy, and food. Reducing an individual carbon footprint depends on the discrete action one partakes. For example, a small decision like where you travel or how you travel can have a significant impact on your carbon footprint.
Thus, one of the effective ways in minimizing your carbon footprint is to reduce your travel.
To be precise, traveling is not always necessary to get the job done. So, before you book your business flight, ask yourself the reason for flying and what if a video call can replace it. If not a video call, are there any possible digital solutions that would allow you to interact and carry out the same tasks with the same productivity?
Especially, Covid-19 has significantly shifted and reshaped the way we work and communicate. The sectors that were exposed to the high physical proximity included medical care, on-site service, outdoor production and maintenance, farms, construction sites, warehousing, and indoor production.
In short, working remotely dented in the business travels substantially and for good. We all have witnessed that attending a virtual meeting or collaborating remotely can save the time of travel, avoid logistics hassles, and enhance work-life balance. Avoiding transportation can help in mitigating climate change in general.
The XpertEye platform is used by different industries, from service technicians maintaining heavy equipment to surgeons remotely collaborating a heart surgery. Our remote collaboration platform is making business travels less necessary, reducing hereby company’s carbon footprint.
The Good Planet Foundation carried an initial analysis showing that 55,000 tC02eq have been avoided (and will be avoided) over the entire period of use of the XpertEye solution (25 months), which represents 26,400 tC02e/year.
Each XpertEye kit used, avoided one ton of CO2 equivalent for our customers each month.
Recently, we determined our "raison d'être" or sense of purpose as "Enhancing professional life while preserving the planet".
Marie-Anne Denis, CSR Director AMA
Before the pandemic, Solvay Materials Italy used to host an on-site tour of their application development lab for their remotely located clients and colleagues. Imposed by travel restrictions, the team initiated XpertEye remote collaboration to organize the virtual tour of the lab, where everyone could walk through the step-by-step process, despite their distant physical locations. The point of view of the person wearing the smart glasses gave a much better user experience than moving around with a mobile phone.
Some of the results:
In the US poultry industry, Wayne farms has been leveraging the XpertEye solution for virtual audits and remote collaboration. Now, they troubleshoot breakdowns of specific equipment remotely, avoiding a service technician flying across the country. The issue can now be fixed in two hours, whereas previously the downtime could be up to 2 days.
Using smart glasses has now been completely integrated into their daily operations.
Investing in remote collaboration solutions provides an immense opportunity to mitigate big carbon impactors. At AMA, we are thriving to develop various use cases for different industries, thus enabling a collective approach to limit carbon footprint.
